Technical

Programming
The CR-78 can haz 4 patterns of 2 bars each (2x48 clock pulses).
Each pattern can consist of a total of 4 instruments.
Clever trick: the 5th instrument can de added to a pattern, by triggering it externally using the WRITE port during PLAY mode.

Connections
Back side of the Roland CR-78:

For external programming, you need 3 sockets: START/STOP, WRITE and EXT CLOCK

The WRITE and START/STOP input sockets need:
- an S-Trigger, which is nothing more than an on/off switch, so do not feed a 5V gate voltage into the socket.
- well actually you can feed 5V into the socket, for safety keep it 5V though.

The EXT CLOCK input socket needs:
- 12 pulses per quarter note (48 pulses for each whole 4/4 measure, 96 pulses for the 2 bars)
- between +5V and +15V
- a pulse of minimal 5 milliseconds

MIDI to CV
The "Kenton Pro Solo MkIII" can generate all the required signals from a standard MIDI signal. The unit converts MIDI data to the 3 needed CV signals.

When programming the Kenton to control the CR-78 with MIDI, program the following Ports:
- S-Trig
- AUX1
- AUX2

CR-78 Port IN Kenton Port OUT Para Val Kenton setting
WRITE S-TRIG P16 S__ S-Trigger without pull up
START/STOP AUX1 P20 Stt Start/Stop Clock
CLOCK AUX2 P30 CL1 CLOCK1

MIDI THRU P90 S24 Set MIDI THRU port to DIN SYNC

Use the CR-78 TRIGGER OUT to the SQ1's "sync in", and then the gate out to the WRITE input. start the CR-78, and then hit start on the SQ1 at the desired downbeat. No special cable used.
