The AKAI MPC One GATE signal used as the CR-78 Clock

Because the CR-78 has a sequencer, it has a Clock. The TEMPO knob controls the Sequencer Clock tempo.

However, you can also control the Sequencer tempo externally by sending 5V pulses to the EXT CLOCK input. With every pulse, the Sequencer advances one Step. No matter how much time there is between every GATE pulse. The CR-78 is very patient.
I used the GATE output of the AKAI MPC ONE to pulse the CR-78 Sequencer. Works beautifully. You only have to place a random note in the MPC MIDI timeline of the GATE Track to send the 5V Clock pulse on every note.

Connector

Wiring of the Stereo jack from the MPC ONE to the Mono Jack.
The MONO Jack goes into the EXT CLOCK as follows.

Standard wiring

Name 5V FX Audio Colour

Tip CV Send Left White
Ring GATE Return Right Red
Sleeve Ground   Ground

However, with the MPC ONE, you can decide for yourself whether the Tip or the Ring sends CV or GATE signals.
It's arbitrary.

The sequencer can record a total of 96 steps per instrument.
The Step Selector lets you choose how many Steps the Sequencer pointer advances to the next Step after it has Written the Instrument on a Step.

PROGRAM RHYTHM I:

1
2
3
4

When you press the left (white) button to write the instrument on a step, the WS-1 does the following things:
- it sends an S-Trigger to the WRITE port, so the CR-78 writes the chosen instrument on this Step in the selected "Program Rhythm" track number (I..IV).
- after this, it sends the amount of 5 Volts trigger signals to the EXT CLOCK input that you have set with the Step Selector.
this makes the sequencer Step-pointer advance this many steps.
