Yamaha AN1x - Maintenance

start - maintenance - quick info - editor

Some issues with the AN1x can be resolved:

RIBBON CONTROLLER
Vintagesynth forum: It seems to be a common problem with older AN1x synths that the ribbon controller starts sending erroneous CCs. In the worst of cases, the ribbon ends up behaving as if there were a finger stuck on its very leftmost side. Open up the synth by unscrewing ALL of the black screws on the bottom of the device. They are all identical, so don't worry about what goes where. When it's open, you will see this. What worked for me was turning the outermost trimpot on the ribbon board EVER SO SLIGHTLY (a nearly imperceptible amount) counter-clockwise. I had the synth resting with its rear panel on a chair, so I could simultaneously mess with the ribbon and adjust the trimpots. I just turned until I reached a point where the ribbon weirdness went away, and then a tiny little bit more for good measure.

forum.pianoworld.com: And here is where the crying starts. I really thought the X-Z touch pad was capacitive in nature, like those laptop mouse pad thingies. When I first opened up the AN1x I was somewhat shocked to find almost no circuitry supporting the touch pad, but when I peeled back the top protective plastic on the pad, the awful sickening truth was laid bare. My beloved touch pad, with which I'd had so much fun, so many fond memories, turned out to be a cheap contrivance made of carbon deposited conductive plastic! (copy of the page but with pictures)

AFTERTOUCH
Gearslutz: Thought I'd share this with all you AN1x users who need to adjust the insanely sensitive aftertouch. It can be done manually if you unscrew the bottom panel. There is an OFFSET and GAIN trim pot under the keybed -- you'll see it as soon as you take off the bottom panel. Just did this, as I was having problems accidentially pushing into aftertouch on regular key presses. Set the Gain trimmer fully clockwise, and now I can decide for myself when to aftertouch.

LCD BACKLIGHT
Syntaur forum: over time the screen becomes dim and hard to read. I just bought a almost mint condition AN1X except the backlight is pretty dim and hard to read so I plan on replacing the LEDs. The LEDs in the AN1X are 2V. You have to solder in the new LEDs yourself.

BATTERY
The stock battery is a 3V "CR2450y". To replace: use DL2430/CR2430 batteries in the An1x, they fit perfectly. Apparently they may last less time...but they’re easily available so stock up, and make sure you regularly back up to An1xedit or whatever you use. Don't forget to backup all your patches before replacing the battery, and do a factory reset afterwards.

CAPS
You can order new knobs for the AN1x on the DJTechTools website if you lost them. Knobs are 6.5mm D shaft pots. See bottom of the page for the encoder tyoes. You need the 180° version.

FIRMWARE UPGRADE
Vintagesynth forum:
Q: I have noticed that there is a firmware v1.04 out there somewhere. Does anyone have idea what fixes it has?
A: 1.04 OS corrects an erroneous 'low voltage' warning which can occur prematurely and also corrects the audio response when modulating the depth, i.e., return, of delay effects. Finding a programmer that can write on a M27C802CZ might be a bit difficult. / As far as I know, it updates the clickiness you get from a tempo synced delay.

Q: Does anyone know how I can check whether my AN1x has the 1.04 chip installed?
A: Press +,- and 0 while powering up.

I've recently fallen in love with this synth again but the tempo delay clicks are driving me daft.

You can buy the system upgrade v1.04 EPROM on Ebay. Search for Yamaha AN1x EPROM.

It was actually easier than I thought. The EPROM can be ordered on ebay.
First, how to find the EPROM orientation?

Flip out the original EPROM from the socket en put in the new EPROM.
